Seven-letter honeycomb helper

For puzzles like Spelling Bee: every word must use the centre letter, may use the other six as often as it likes, and has at least 4 letters. Counts first; the words stay hidden until you ask.

      How it works

      Put the middle letter of the honeycomb in Centre and the six around it in Six outer letters, in any order. A word counts when it is at least 4 letters long, contains the centre letter at least once, and uses no letter outside the seven. Letters can repeat: GAGA and GALLAMINE are both fine with G in the centre and A, L, I, N, M, E around it.

      A pangram uses all seven letters at least once. Pangrams are marked in mustard in the list, and the count above the button tells you how many there are without saying what they are.

      No spoilers by default. Before you reveal anything you see only the total, the number of pangrams and how many words there are of each length, which is often enough of a nudge (“there is a 10-letter word”). One tap shows the full list, longest first, A to Z within each length. The list hides again whenever you change a letter.

      Worked example. Centre G with L, A, I, N, M, E: 221 words in this list, 8 of them pangrams (GEMINAL, GLEAMING, LIEGEMAN, MENINGEAL, ENAMELING, GALLAMINE, ENAMELLING, EMALANGENI), from 31 four-letter words up to four of ten letters. Centre O with C, T, P, U, S, Y gives 138 words and no pangram at all: no word in the list uses all seven of those letters.

      What this cannot do

      • It is not the puzzle’s own word list. Daily honeycomb puzzles, Spelling Bee among them, use a hand-edited list that leaves out obscure, technical and offensive words. This page uses ENABLE, a public-domain Scrabble-style list of 172,823 words, so it finds many words the puzzle will not accept (EMALANGENI, the plural of the lilangeni, the currency of Eswatini) and can miss a newer word the puzzle does accept. Expect a count several times higher than the puzzle’s.
      • No daily answers. It does not know today’s letters and never will. It works on the seven letters you type.
      • No proper nouns, no hyphens. ENABLE has neither, and neither do these puzzles.
      • 4 to 15 letters. The site ships ENABLE’s words up to 15 letters; the rare longer word made of seven letters is not listed.
      • Slurs are removed. 107 racial, ethnic, homophobic, transphobic and ableist slurs (and their plural or -ed forms) are dropped before the list reaches your browser, so they never appear even when your letters make them. Profanity that is not a slur is kept.
      • Not affiliated. This is an independent helper. It uses no puzzle’s logo or design and has no connection with any publisher.

      Where the words come from

      The list is enable1.txt from the dolph/dictionary repository on GitHub, pinned to one commit and checked by hash. The page downloads one file from this site: the 98,005 words of 4 to 15 letters that use at most seven different letters (no other word can come out of a seven-letter honeycomb). Your letters are never sent anywhere.
